The entire Palm Springs area is renowned for having some of the best golf courses in the country and entire world. Although famous courses like those at Desert Willow and Indian Well Golf Resort get a lot of the attention, there are also some hidden gems you won’t want to miss out on when it comes to finding a favorite Palm Desert golf course to play.
PGA West Greg Norman Course
The Greg Norman Course, located at PGA West in La Quinta offers a stunning setting of natural beauty. The course is situated on less than 40 acres and offers plenty of very manageable par 4’s. Golfers can feel a great sense of privacy on the course that offers reachable greens for mid-to-high handicap players. Although not as famous as the Palmer, Nicklaus and Dye designed at the PGA West resort, the Norman should definitely not be missed.
Woodhaven Country Club
Located in Palm Desert, this is another one of the undervalued golf courses here. All players have the chance to score at a fast pace here. At only 5,800 yards this course is small and tight, but still has some teeth to it. Accuracy is at a high premium, and a solid iron game is an absolute must. Woodhaven is a great place to start for visitors wanting to get a quick preparation round in before playing some of the major venues in the area.
Heritage Palms Golf Club
This is another community-style course that the desert is known for that is often overlooked. Located in Indio, it is quite appropriate that Arthur Hills, who is one of the most underrated designers in the country, drew this course up.
Heritage is well manicured, highly played and lots of fun. Hills has made great use of nearly every inch on the Heritage grounds. It is 6,700 yards long and makes expert use of lake water, teasing sight lines and waste areas that keep all golfers honest.
Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa
There are three different nine-hold courses here that provide plenty of opportunities for confidence-building, family time and shot-shaping. However the Ted Robinson designs are no pushover. Make sure to play the West Course for the ultimate enjoyment of the highly playable grounds.
The West nine starts out in brutal fashion with a par 4 dogleg left that is followed up with a beast of a par 3 and then a long par 5. The first three holes combine for almost 1,800 yards and will test even those with single-digit handicaps.
