Britain's Safest Spots to Live

Between news reports of muggings and assaults, and the growing number of burglaries, it’s no wonder that the newspapers are falling over themselves to name the safest places to live in the UK. Small to medium sized market towns, it seems, are generally all round better places to live than the country’s big cities. Places that are regarded as among the safest spots in the UK generally have the lowest incidence of burglary or home invasion, coupled with the fact that inhabitants tend to be more security-aware.

Dyfed-Powys, Wales

Recent crime statistics show that one of the safest places to live in the UK is Dyfed-Powys, in central Wales, where only three people out of every hundred were victims of crime in 2014. No matter what the statistics say, how safe people actually feel in the area where they live may be quite different.

Wokingham, Berkshire

Wokingham is a busy market town and it has recently been voted one of the safest places to live in the UK, according to a recent survey. Crime often occurs in areas where there are huge discrepancies between the haves and the have-nots; in London for example. One of the reasons that Wokingham might be less crime ridden than many other areas is that the average salary is higher than in many other parts of the UK. The town also has good schools and housing stock, and these aspects help to make Wokingham one of the safest places to live.

Norwich, Norfolk

In one study that concentrated on England and Wales, rather than the UK as a whole, Norwich was at the top of the list of safe places to live. Its position at the top of the list was based on indications that it had the lowest rate of domestic burglary, and the lowest rate of burglary overall. The level of security awareness in the city was lower than in some places, but it still scored well at just under 40%.

Lightwater, Surrey

Overall, Surrey was generally regarded as one of the UK’s safest spots to live. As with Wokingham, salaries and schools were good and crime was low. It would seem that people in areas regarded as safe help to make it so, because of their own home security consciousness.

No matter where you live, prevention is always better than cure, and a good home security company can help protect your home against break-ins. Ensuring that both windows and doors have secure locks will often put off would-be burglars. It’s also generally true that in smaller, quieter areas, people are more likely to spot something out of the ordinary, and this may be enough to make those intent on burglary think twice.

While it may be true that there is more crime in large cities than in smaller towns, there are things that homeowners can do to make their property a safer place to be. It is certainly worth getting a professional in to assess the current state of your home security, so that you can ensure you are safe.
